Suspicious Minds

Suspicious Minds

I heard the announcement
That Elvis had left the building
And I saw his bodyguard roll his eyes
And his driver threw his hands up
Because the king had run again

So they turned off the lights
And they locked all the doors
And they counted all the bills
The show had been another success
Just like they had always been

But in the dark and in the silence
I heard a whisper speak
“Here we go again, asking where I’ve been
You can’t see these tears are real
I’m crying”

I followed it as best as I could
Through the labyrinth of this place
Following his voice and following his spirit
Searching for someone who isn’t there
Or so they said

I’m crawling up some rotten stairs
Down hallways made of time
And I cannot find him, he’s not here
Still I know that I’m not by myself
The whispers never quiet

So Elvis left the building
But nobody saw him go
His presence still on my skin
So if Elvis had left the building
Then why am I not alone?

Only cotton, never skin

Only cotton, never skin

No search warrants for the hidden parts,
The judge had signed off for the day.
Ignoring the fear and the racing hearts,
So trial was soon underway.
Prosecution came fully unprepared,
Defense saw a default win.
Superficial evidence, easily shared,
Only cotton, never skin.

He’s innocent till proven guilty,
And proof was never disclosed.
Innocent by reason of insanity,
The evil was misdiagnosed.
There was nothing more she could have done,
No objection was heard, no matter how loud.
She rested her case, judge and jury in one,
Had ruled on behalf of the crowd.

So the verdict read was surely fair,
He’d never been wrong for a day.
All the guilt, the pain, the disrepair,
They had made it all go away.
She anxiously searched for someone to see,
The lies they had painted in white.
It was then that she knew she would never be free,
From the maggots that crawled deep inside.
